State Capitol

Capitol of a state is the place where the state legislative assembly of the state meets and enacts the state laws. Every states of United States of America can boast of its own capital but the capitol of the smallest state of USA is really exquisite in its look. The usual shape of most of the American state capitol is a long rectangle box with a dome on a barrel in the middle of it.

The makers of state Capitol in Rhodes Island realized that mere imitation of the forms of other state capitol will be artless imitation. They wanted to show that Rhodes island was different from other states in every respect. The fact that Rhodes island is a fiercely independent state has been established by the architectural pattern of the State Capitol of Rhodes Island.



There are several murals inside the dome of State capitol of Rhodes Island. Inside the dome of Rhodes island there is a mural painted by Giorgio DeFelice. The mural is depicting many things of Rhodes Island-literature, commerce, justice and education. Another mural of the dome is the depiction of colonization of Providence Plantation by Rogger Williams. At the crest of the dome there is a bronze statue of “Independent man”. The statue symbolizes the spirit and freedom of the colony granted by King Charles II. According to Royal Charter of 1663 Rhodes Island was declared as a place of tolerance. This document was in use as a the constitution of state until 1843. The royal charter has been kept in original in the senate chamber.

  • This is a rare building with a self-supporting marble dome. Only three other structures on the earth have such type of marble dome.
  • The structure of state Capitol of Rhodes is constructed from 327,000 cubic feet of White Georgia marble and 1,309 tons of iron beams.
  • 15,000,000 bricks were used to build this state capitol of USA
