Conanicut Island is a very important island of Rhodes Island State of United States of America and it is also the second largest island in Narragansett Bay. This island is connected to Newport of Rhodes Island by Claiborne Pell Bridge. This very important bridge is also known as Newport Bridge. Another bridge connects the western part of the island to the main land by Jamestown-Verrazzano bridge. The Conanicut island makes the maximum part of the town of Jamestown.

According to the census report of 2000 presented by United States Census Bureau this island has a total area of 24.46 square kilometer. According to the same census report the island has a population of 5,622 people.
Geography of Conanicut Island: This island is nine mile in length and only one mile in breath. The highest point of elevation of the island is 135 feet. An interesting fact about the island was named after
the name of an Indian community. The island falls in the eastern time zone of USA. The notorious pirate of the area Captain William Kidd is believed to have lived in this island.
For more than more than two hundred years this island has remained mostly rural settlement. Even today when rural community has become a rare object in USA this island has still remained its rustic characteristic. Even the commercial center of Jamestown has the flavor of a conventional village.
Some historic buildings which include some lighthouses, windmills and the remnants of old military fortifications are still visible in the island. Older settlements of the island are still in tact and a few farms can still be visible in the island.
A visit to Conanicut Island will give you a chance to enjoy genuine rural settings. Vast expanse of open land and the soothing greenery of the island can be enjoyed traveling on the roadways. The pleasant views of the island can either be enjoyed on foot or on bicycle.
