The most unique feature of Rhode Island is that it is the smallest state in the Northeastern part of the country with the largest official name- the State of Rhode Island and Province Plantations. Province Plantations is the name of the mainland of Rhode Island, which in itself was known as the Aquidneck Island in the 17th and 18th century. Today Aquidneck Island comprises the towns of Portsmouth and Middletown and then city of Newport.
